Hi, I'm James Lowe. I'm a South African expedition guide focusing on delivering premium experiences centred around the kelp forest in Cape Town.
I grew up surfing the southern beaches of Cape Town which sparked an innate love for the natural world and shaped my future to revolve around the ocean. I achieved a BSc Honours in Geology in 2014 which I used to become a specialist expedition guide on intimate cruise vessels that traveled to the remotest of destinations. It was a fortuitous surfing trip to fiji, and arriving to a completely flat ocean that lead me to become a qualified scuba diver. This also sparked an interest to explore the kelp forest when I returned home. After having just snorkelled and dived a coral reef, I couldn't believe how colourful and diverse the reefs were in the kelp forest that were under my nose the whole time. Shortly after I bought a GoPro and began sharing my under water experiences on Instagram and soon after found my niche love of kelp forest photography. This has developed to the point where I have have changed my career to share, educate and enrich others by showing them how special and unique the Great African Sea Forest ecosystem is, thus starting my company Kelp Town.
